| Set in the northwest corner of lower michigan, Sleeping Bear is a fictional links course defined by Lake Michigan on the west and massive sand dunes to the east. The lake comes into play on 8 holes although it should not be a major factor. The most prominent feature of the course are the 190+ bunkers including massive waste bunkers and cavernous pot bunkers. Many of the waste bunkers contain long grassed mounds, of which many contain there own small pot bunkers. Also notice the two Scotish style burns that wind through the course. Another prominent feature are the size of the greens, some as deep as 90+ yards. Finding the green does not always guarantee a 2 putt. The course plays over 7900 yards and I suggest playing breezy to gusty winds, very dry greens, heavy rough, and sunset skies. The fairways are generous and the greens seem to be very playable on very dry, provided you position your approach shots carefully. The local rules state the sand dunes are unplayable, the driving range north of the wall running along side the 18th is o.b., and the area surrounding the abandoned church and accompanying grave yard are unplayable, and please do not jump the wall and try to find any golf balls hit into the grave yard! Lastly some of the holes have multiple paths to reach the green and to get them to come into play I had to aim some of the shot paths between two fairways so be aware on some holes you have to practice a bit to pick out the best line to play the hole. I realise this causes a problem for the computer golfers on some holes but it cannot be helped. Enjoy! |
