I decided to start 2022 with a bang by playing another rlslay’s course, this time an updated version of his 2008 Coconut Key Island and, needless to say, I was not disappointed !
This par 73 is another gem with gorgeous lush vegetation (with plenty of tall palm trees, some of them strategically-placed), a few water hazards, some rollercoaster fairways and plenty of small greens.
Right off the bat, you will start with a very tough par-5 (and not par-4 as mentioned by BJMac), with a tee shot over a big pond landing onto a narrow tree-lined fairway in the left corner halfway, and a very long second shot toward the green, with the fairway twisting left then to the right with plenty of trees on the right.
Then, after the short par-4 2nd hole, with an uphill tee shot landing onto a rollercoaster (and twisting) fairway and an elevated green, you will head for one of my favorite holes, the short (310 yards) left dogleg par-4 3rd, where you can gamble and try to reach the green by cutting the corner with your tee shot over the elongated lake, bordered by quite a few tall palm trees.
Two easier holes follow, with the right dogleg par-4 4th, with an uphill tee shot landing near a lone bunker, set on a mound in the right corner, and a downhill approach to the green, and the scenic par-3 5th, with a very big and wide elongated bunker on the left ending next to the green.
The 645-yard long par-5 6th hole is one of my favorites and one of the toughest and most picturesque you will ever face, with a big elongated lake all the way in the middle (and bending to the right) and very narrow tree-lined fairways on both sides, forcing you to hit your tee shot over the water to the left, then your second shot over the lake again to the right and your final approach over the water back to the left toward the green, leaving you hardly any margin for error(s) !
Thankfully, the par-4 7th hole will spell relief for you with a blind and uphill tee shot landing onto a wide fairway and a downhill green, before moving on to the right dogleg par-4 8th, a little more challenging with a blind tee shot downward a narrow fairway (with a couple of bunkers in the right corner), and an elongated bunker all the way across in front of the narrow green, and finishing with the gorgeous par-3 9th hole, with plenty of sand between the tee box and the green, surrounded halfway around by water, quite big on both sides and narrower behind.
The back 9 starts with the very tough left dogleg par-5 (almost 600 yard-long) with a slightly-uphill tee shot landing near two elongated bunkers, a little apart on the left, midway, followed by a hidden second shot over a few mounds and a short approach toward the tiny elevated green.
After the right dogleg par-4 11th hole, with a slightly-uphill tee shot landing near two small bunkers in the corner of the slanted fairway, and a blind approach to the green, hidden by a couple of small mounds, you will face the straight but tricky short (around 325 yard) par-4 12th hole, with its peninsula green hard to reach with two small elongated lakes to the left and right of the very narrow fairway as you get close to it.
Fortunately, the par-3 13th hole might prove to be a lucky one if you can avoid the small bunkers on both sides of the green, set on a small hilltop, just like the left dogleg par-4 14th, with a downhill tee shot and a short approach to the slightly-elevated green, partially hidden by tall palm trees.
On the left dogleg par-5 15th hole, you will have to hit your slightly-downhill tee shot to the right (in front of the lake) if you want to avoid landing near the narrow fairway, with a big bunker on the left and that small lake on the right, midway : that way, you will have a clearer view on your second shot but you won’t be able to reach the green, hidden by more trees “standing” in the way, leaving you only with a birdie opportunity at best...
Finally, after the “easy” left dogleg par-4 16th hole, with a big bunker in front, not far from the green (on the left), and the cute par-3 17th, with a blind tee shot downward to the green (with three small bunkers behind), you will face the very picturesque (and tough) left dogleg par-5 18th hole, with a meandering creek splitting the fairway diagonally twice, “forcing” you to hit your last approach shot over the water (on the right) while avoiding a big bunker on the left of the green !
Unlike a lot of rlslay's courses, where the panorama is gorgeous, you won't spend your time gazing at the suburban areas on this Coconut Island GC ; instead, you will be too busy admiring the superb plantings all along, and thinking twice about your shots on this great course, where patience is the key if you want to finish with a decent scorecard...

Wow, brilliant design, this is one terrific course with clever and unique architecture. The front 9 in particular features some outstanding holes, such as the wicked par 4 opener and demanding long 6th. The back also has a few gems, eg the par 4 14th, a ripper target-style hole, and the strategic par 5 closer. Add in a couple of par 3 beauties at 9 and 13, and crafty short par 4's (forgot the numbers), and nothing weak in between, and this is a really top quality layout. It looks gorgeous, plays smooth and is very entertaining throughout - simply an awesome creation. Cheers!

Great course Rislay. Holes 1 and 10 were very tough. None of your previous courses had prepared me for such difficulty. You naughty boy!!. As for the admirable intense graphics..,you outdid yourself. Five stars plus.

There are no such thing as invisible trees. It is caused by not having a strong enough video card to render trees. There is nothing a designer can do to either cause this, or prevent it. It is inherent in the game engine. You need to either adjust your options or get a better video card, get a stronger card but it is in no way, the designers fault and I hear people saying that a lot.. It is your card! But not seeing some trees or experiencing lag on tree/plant intense courses, is NOT the designers fault!!

A great looking course, but I don't like to hit INVISIBLE objects (hole 12?)
So: exit Coconut Island.

Your design gives a whole new meaning to the description: Fantasy. Thank you for the flora. I was lucky enough to explore much of it. I'm going back ;) ed

WOW...WOW...WOW... is there a 10 star rating !!!!
One of my top 10 courses.. The scenery was outrageous... I kept hitting skyballs (5 wood) just to have the ball hang in the air so I could look around!!!
I did have to turn shadow to low to get rid of the infamous "Black squares"...
Holes 9 and 13 still had the video run away on me, but can't wait to play it again.
GREAT JOB !!!!

Outstanding course, Rob. I loved the eye candy. I made a few mistakes during my round and in particular #18. A double bogey ruined what I thought would be a respectable score. I'm not as good as some of the other TW08 players but I have fun. I ended up with a -1, 71. Oh also I thought that the announcer was a liar on a lot of putts. :-) But I ignored him on the obvious ones.

Rislay---Very very well done course---lots of palm trees in some of the nastiest places. Very well thought out course but very rewarding if you play carefully and smart. The maps hide some of the key places where fairways are hiding to make unreachable greens reachable. Check out all your drive options before hitting the ball and you can save a couple strokes on your game. Great course MR. Rislay---keep em coming---MDM3673
